Butterfly Drawing

A finished butterfly drawing colored with crayons.

It'southward not too hard to empathize why so many children AND adults are fascinated with butterflies. Their color and frail dazzler make them endlessly fun to look at.

Many internet tutorials for learning how to draw them, however, I found to exist overly elementary (equally in wings with a few circles) or overly complex (complete monarchs with dozens of shapes).

This project is intended to country in the eye. The outline of the wings land on the center guides, to assistance students get started, and at that place are just enough shapes inside to give a realistic wait, without getting forever lost in them.

TIP: Attempt challenging your students to layer crayon color to jazz up their groundwork. You don't have to use oil pastels to do it, pressing hard with crayons and laying down lots of waxy color tin can expect amazing too! Scroll downward to encounter this lovely purple coloring option.

Using Cartoon Guides

Yous may have noticed that all of the tutorials on this site have a dashed line running through the eye of each step, both in the horizontal and vertical direction. If students make their own centered lines on theirown newspaper, before cartoon, they will have an easy reference to follow.

The best way to become students off to a good outset to any drawing projection is to show them how a couple of guides can really help as reference points.

For instance, as seen in Step 1 below, the butterfly body needs to begin in the heart of the paper. The meridian wings then fill the height half of the paper.

Cartoon skills are all most seeing where to place 1's lines, and then having some visual reference signal to go started, will e'er aid anyone learn how to exist a petty more than accurate.

Does that mean then that students need to depict a big fat lines down the center of their paper before they kickoff? Goodness no, please don't! That will well-nigh likely be hard to erase and distract from whatsoever finished fine art. No, simply fold the newspaper in half both ways, make a crease, and unfold. The dazzler is that by the time the drawing is done and colored in, the creases will disappear.

And now, on to our cartoon project.

Materials for Butterfly Drawing

  • Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better task than just the pencil tips.
  • Black Sharpie Marking. These fine bespeak permanent marker pens make dainty blackness outlines, have a good tip for coloring, and never bleed when they become wet. Employ them with good ventilation and add extra paper underneath to protect your tables.
  • Prang Crayons. These are a bit softer than other crayons so they sometimes look like oil pastels. They as well have a some prissy brown shades that Crayola does not accept unless yous buy their larger boxes.
  • Crayola Crayons. The reliable brand that e'er works well. The 24 pack has some of my favorite golden orange and yellowish colors that seem a flake richer and warmer than the ones Prang has.
